GRADE YOUR CARDS FOR INCREASED VALUE
By Rob WilliamsThe first thing that any sports-cards collector thinks when they get their hands on a rare card is invariably “how much is it worth?” The value of any one card is not static; sports cards are as dynamic in price as the stock market. Your card can be worth more or less depending on whether or not the sport is in season; how the player did in recent games; their popularity; the rarity of the card; and many, many other factors. However, one great way to improve the value of your card is to get it graded.
“Grading” means that a professional sports cards appraiser will look at your card and give it a score from one to ten, reflecting the condition the card is in. This is a worthy service because it can greatly increase the value of some cards, as well as sealing the cards in a protective case in order to preserve the state the card was in when it was graded.
Not just any card should be graded, as it does cost a small fee for companies to provide this service. Typically Autographed, Memorabilia, Short Print, or old/rare cards will be sent in. The price of the grading process depends on the company you use, as well as the card itself in some cases.
Before getting your card appraised, you should consult pricing guides, online forums and auction sites, and local card shops to determine that it’s worth the cost and time it takes to send in the card. Seek out people knowledgeable in the sports cards industry and have them look at your cards and give you their opinion.
If you do decide to have your card graded, be sure to do a lot of research on the company you intend to use. Find a reputable grader and ask other collectors who they have used and their experience with grading. We recommend Beckett Grading Services (BGS) or Professional Sports Authenticators (PSA). They are the most reputable graders in the industry. Showtime Cards has a dealer direct account with BGS, so bring in your cards and we can help take care of your grading needs. This is a great way to protect your cards and help increase their value, but it must be done properly. Good luck!
